"I Adopted Your Dog Today "
I adopted your dog today
The one you left at the pound
The one you had for seven years
and no longer wanted around.
I adopted your dog today
Do you know he's lost weight?
Do you know he's scared and depressed
and has lost all faith?
I adopted your dog today.
he had fleas and a cold,
but don't worry none.
You've unburdened your load.
I adopted your dog today.
Were you having a baby or moving away?
Did you suddenly develop allergies or was there no reason he couldn't stay?
I adopted your dog today.
he doesn't play or eat much
He's very depressed, but
he will learn again to trust.
I adopted your dog today.
And here he will stay.
He's found his forever home
and a warm bed on which to lay.
I adopted your dog today.
And I will give him all that he could need.
Patience, love, security, and understanding.
Hopefully he will forget your selfish deed.

Life As a Puppy Mill Dog
Imagine spending your whole life barefoot on a wire floor.
Your feet are always bloody and sore.
When you go to the bathroom,
it collects on the ground underneath, left there indefinitely.
The stench makes you sick.
My only protection from the sun, rain, wind, and snow is a torn tarp that dangles over the top of my cage.
I am constantly forced to breed,
and my children are taken from me, sold, except for the babies that die
from lack of proper care.
Many of my babies will die on their way to be sold due to illness or because they are too young to eat on their own.
More will die once they get to their destinations, as a result of inadequate care, fear, loneliness, and disease.
My body aches from having so many children and not getting any exercise.
I am are exhausted, starving and sick.
The large male that shares my cage won't let me eat or drink, and attacks me when I try. The only food I get is stale and moldy anyways.
I have infected bites and scratches all over my body, and flies are constantly swarming around my face and eyes.
I am always afraid.
I may die this month, from any number of ailments. If I don't... I wish I would.
I will die young - whether from neglect and abuse or from being shot when I can no longer produce babies to sell.
I will die alone, and many of my children will experience the same fate.
I have never known love or the freedom of running through an open field with a best friend.
Here there are only enemies.
